Hip Hop/Rap

Hip-hop was born out of the struggles and creativity of African American and Latino youth in New York. The genre's foundation was laid by DJ Kool Herc, who introduced the breakbeat technique—looping the instrumental sections of funk and soul records for dancers to move to. Soon, MCs (rappers) began rhyming over these beats, telling stories about urban life, social struggles, and personal experiences.
